Best Puppy & Dog Food

Meat Tenderizer… it is sprinkled on their food. this meat tenderizer develops a foul taste in a dog’s digestive system. So that when the puppy/dog eats own poop,its supposed to taste worse,it sort of deters them from eating their own poop?

I have heard of that and seen the method recommended. I really don’t know if it works because it makes the owner more diligent about watching and most likely picking up the poop or if it actually displeasing to the dog. I haven’t seen it cause harm nor will it replace some missing nutrient.

Does anyone feed their dog a homemade diet? I need to know some things. Okay so today I started my shih apso mix princess, on her new homemade food diet. It includes rice, potato, beef, carrots and eggs. It is in a stewy paste and was very appetizing to her. However, at night, she is still hungry. I measured out 1 cup of the mixture, just like the internet sources say for a 14 pound dog. What else can I do to fill her stomach but not make her fat?

I’ve been feeding my dogs home-made for about a year now, using Dr. Pitcairn’s book. My dogs get fed twice a day – is that what you’re doing, dividing her daily portion into 2 meals? If not, you might want to try that because dogs do much better being fed twice a day.

Dogs need less food cup-wise being fed home-made food because there are no fillers, there’s lots of calories in it, so if you’re following a good recipe, your dog won’t be hungry following the guidelines for her weight. There may be an adjustment period while she gets used to the new food, though.

I have a 9 week old pure bred German Shepherd pup and I only want the absolute BEST for her! She is currently on Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Food, which I’ve always thought was good but I read the ingredients and corn meal is listed as the second ingredient so now I’m not so sure it’s the best. I’ve always been told that the first 4 ingredients listed on a bag of dog food should be meat and not grains or by-products. I am thinking about getting into dog shows with her and possibly breeding her when she’s old enough. She is like one of my children and I really only want the best for her.

there is a website that does a comparison and rating of the different brands of dog food both wet and dry but I can not find it at the moment. my irish wolfhound puppy was raised on eukanaba, and iams, but on yahoo answers someone posted this dog food comparison website and told me that my puppy ( who is chewing his foot) would do better with canidae. according to the rating canidae is a good wholesome product for every stage of the dogs life. We fed our chi Royal Canine 28 he hated it We tried Iams small bites he hated it, Now we are trying Avoderm small bites, he likes it more than the others. What are the best quality dog foods?

This is a hotly debated topic for many dog owners on Y!A. I, personally, have a preference for Natural Balance.

I feed my dog Natural Balance Ultra Premium formula because he has a highly sensitive digestive system. I’ll season it with a little wet food (Natural Balance Limited Ingredients Diet) or some chicken broth for flavor.

I’d steer clear of Iams because it has a lot of fillers instead of nutrients.

This is what the breeder is feeding my puppy. Is it a good brand? I have heard that lots of dog foods out there are crap. Thanks!

Absolutely not. I can only guess that you are using the "Growth" formula. Look at the ingredients:
Chicken By-Product Meal, Ground Yellow Corn, Ground Brown Rice, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Natural Mixed Tocopherols), Dried Beet Pulp, Pork Meal, Fish Meal, Flaxseed, Dried Egg Product, Brewers Dried Yeast, Salt, Potassium Chloride and Vitamin-Mineral Fortified.

Byproducts, corn, chicken fat, and beet pulp should never be seen in a dog food. They are all low quality ingredients. There are much better foods out there.

I am interested in making homemade dog food for my 3 year old chihuahua and my 12 week old malchi. I have found a few recipes, but I need more information on what nutritional guide to go by. Like how much meat and which vegetables and fruits to use and how much. I am not interested in the raw food diet since they include bones and being that my dogs are little and one is so young. Also with the raw diets, I hear there is risk of e. coli. I definitely want to cook mine. Also which vitamins or supplements are the best to add? Thank you!

I have fed my dog on raw meat, meaty bones and offal since she was nine weeks old. Her pups will be weaned straight onto this diet too.

The risk of bacterial contaimination is actually higher in cooked and minced meats that are being stored than a solid chunk of meaty bone. Commercial foods are frequently recalled due to contamination – both human and animal, so to say that raw food is riskier is a fallacy.

Dogs are NOT human – their digestive system is designed for raw meat, skin, bones and offal not vegetables, fruits and grains. Please read the attached links before you discount a raw diet. The millions of raw feeders around the world are just not experiencing the so-called problem of bacteria with their dogs.

i have a beagle that will be a year in september he has been on purina puppy chow mixed with alpo wet since he was six weeks old and he is doing great. keep in mind beagles do not know when to stop eating. take his food away about an hour later if any is left. the best book i invested in was how to raise a beagle puppy located at any pet store. it also list foods that are not good for beagles that other breeds will be fine on, such as grapes. good luck they are great dogs

Research BARF diet – you’ve had some ridiculous answers on here.
My dogs are fed on raw minced tripe (green tripe, not the white stuff you can get from the butcher) , beef & lamb, I buy in bulk and freeze it, they also have uncooked bones, chicken carcases (raw, of course) raw eggs (a couple a week), tinned sardines, raw minced veg. They also have ordinary wholemeal mixer.
They rarely have digestive problems (usually from eating something decomposing that they’ve found), never have skin problems or allergies and have excellent coats & plenty of energy!
Well done on not wanting to feed her on 100% processed food which is what commercial diets are. I wouldn’t want to live on a diet of processed food & don’t expect my dogs to either.

I live in Bahamas and the only kind of dog food we really sell here that has some good brand name to it is pedigree, Eukanuba and Purina everything else is lame!! which one of these three is the best for my puppy?
