What’s the difference between adult dog food and puppy dog food??????

January 17th, 2010

I’m just curious as to what it is and whether a puppy can live on adult dog food.

These are the questions that keep me awake at night… LOL

There are two main differences between dog food and puppy food;

1. the size of the kibble, puppy food has smaller pieces to make it easier for little puppies to chew and digest.

2. it is higher in protein because growing dogs need it for energy and to aid growth.

It is also true to say the nutrients are slightly different.

On the whole yes if the kibble isn’t too big a puppy could eat dog food, in fact most manufacturers say to change puppies to adult food at 6-8 months anyway, it’s just the amount of food that varies (puppies need twice as much food per body weight than dogs).

Sleep tight. ;)

What’s better? Dog Food Question…?

January 17th, 2010

Sort of a poll, I guess.
What’s better?

A) Feeding my dog Solid Gold: Barking at the Moon dog food, and feed him raw /once/ a week?
(or)
B) Feeding my dog Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul dog food, and feed him raw /twice/ a week?

Chicken Soup has a 4/6 star rating. And Solid Gold: BatM has a 6/6 star rating and has no grains.

Well, feeding him raw once a week won’t hurt anything. I already feed him Chicken Soup a raw twice a week. In fact, he gets raw today. =P I only feed him once a day (as that’s what he prefers) And he has a whole 24 hours to digest the dry or raw food, so neither of them get in the way of each other. He’s been doing great on it. And it really keeps his teeth clean. I don’t know how I’d keep his teethe clean if I didn’t feed him raw….
Oh, and Solid Gold: BatM is the ONLY super premium dog food with no grans that they sell at any stores over here. It’s actually sold at Petco over here. And I don’t know where I’d get Canidae….

Either food is great. They both have fantastic ingredients so in the long run it is a matter of personal choice and which one you have easiest access to.
Feeding raw is great too…There are people that feed a total raw diet and then there are some that alternate like you are thinking of doing and then still others that feed a morning meal of kibble and a night meal of raw with much success..Just remember not to feed raw & kibble at the same meal.

I have question about dog food? Maxximum Nutrition Walmart Brand…any good?

January 17th, 2010

Hello,

Just a question to those who know more than I. I have been trying to get myself more educated as to dog food, especially, since this recall.

I have a 4 year old chow retriever who is slim, fit, and happy on what he is. It is not the cheapest dog food because I think all that stuff is just crap pretty much. I was looking at this Maxximum Nutrition Walmart brand and was curious if it was any good.

To other dog owners out there I am a little paranoid about the recent dry dogfood recalls I was wondering if someone could point me in the directions of a good dry dog food brand that should be completely safe. Some of the local stores in my town do not even have full recall information out. So anything you have that may help me will be really appreciated.

Thankyou so much for your time I do appreciated it.

Sincerely,

Jammie a concerned dog owner.

Actually, it’s a very high quality food. You’ll note that it contains no animal by-products, artificial flavors or colors and it is free of all preservatives. I feed my Schnauzer the Adult Chicken & Rice Formula. The first two ingredients are Chicken and Chicken Meal. Chicken meal is an extremely concentrated source of high quality animal protein. Other quality ingredients include carrots, peas, beet pulp, dried egg product.

This food by the way contains no wheat gluten, the component of the food recall that was believed to be contaminated.

The guaranteed analysis shows a 27%, 18%, 4% breakdown of protein, fat and fiber. This is another indication of a high quality food.

Now on to the Wal-Mart issue. Several posters will immediately pounce and advise to buy no products from Wal-Mart. Interestingly, they seldom if ever have any specific knowledge about the product in question. Most often these posts have everything to do with a political statement and nothing to do with what is good for your pet.

My advice? Try the food. My dog loves it.

What is the best age for puppys to leave there mother,at 6wks or 8wks,and when can i start puppy food?

January 17th, 2010

I have some toy chihuahua puppys, and i want to know what is the best age to start giving them puppy food, and also what is the best age to find new homes for them?

you should be starting to wean them at 4weeks (ask your vet about this,) smaller breeds of dogs such as toys shouldn’t leave the litter before 10 weeks.

Which of the following dog foods is best for rottweiler puppy?

January 17th, 2010

my vet said i should start to change her food to a better quality food than the one the breeders fed her. so which in your opinion is best for a growing hyperactive as hell rottie puppy: 1) Science Diet 2) Eukanuba or 3) Purina Pro Plan?
p.s. cost is not an issue

None of the ones you listed are very good.
Look for a better food such as Canidae, Wellness, Chicken Soup, Innova, California Natural just to name a few.

Is there a big difference between adult dog food and puppy dog food?

January 7th, 2010

I adopted a toy poodle and when I took him to the vet they looked at his teeth said he was about 8 or 9 months. That was back in February. It’s now May and I was thinking about buying him adult food because that would make him either 11 or 12 months now. Is there a hug difference between adult and puppy food? Would it be bad to feed him adult food too soon or extend the puppy food till after 12 months? Whats the difference?

If he’s 11 or 12 months old, you can put him on adult food. Smaller dogs mature quicker than larger breeds, anyway. The main difference is that puppy food has a higher fat and protein content than adult food.

Question about Wellness Dog Food ..?

January 7th, 2010

How come on the Dog food review page, Wellness dry food is rated 4 star (the fish + sweet potatoe) .. but then the Wellness Supermix dry food is 5 star? And how come the wet food is also 4 star?

My older dog only likes wet food and just recently started eating dry food (Innova) mixed with wet. I was thinking of getting a sample Wellness since it had flavored dry food to see if he would eat it by itsself.. but I was just wonder why they are all different stars?

Does it matter? Is there something I’m missing? Or is it still a really good dog food?

Thanks

I don’t feed Wellness (not available locally) but it is a very good food. My guess is that one formula may have more grains in it? Try to avoid corn, wheat and soy if at all possible and make sure the first ingredient is a named meat. Wellness is made by Old Mother Hubbard in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. They have been around for a long time and have a great reputation.

Innova is also an great food although I have heard some dogs have had loose bowel movements with it. If your dog is doing well on the Innova, stick with it unless you think it’s time for a change. In that case, Wellness would be a great choice to try. Eagle Pack and Canidae are also very good. I feed Canidae here and my dogs are all doing well on it.

If you are interested in canine nutrition, there is a great magazine called Whole Dog Journal. It covers lots of different topics but everyone gets excited in February and March with the list of top rated dog foods comes out. Here is the link to their site: http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/

does homemade dog food fulfill dogs nutrition?

January 7th, 2010

http://dogfoodguide.blogspot.com/2008/06/homemade-dog-treats.html

It depends. Home made food can fulfill the dogs needs IF you do it correctly. I don’t recommend anyone use homemade food unless you FULLY understand dogs nutritional needs. You also have to consider that every dog is different and reacts to food differently.

Whats the best dog shampoo and best puppy food etc?

January 7th, 2010

What is the best:
Dog shampoo
puppy food
dog tooth paste
dog basket company
I live in England, please, only answer if you are a vet/dog owner.

Thankyou, and only KIND answers please.

Realy you could just make a list of what you need and ask your vet/some one form a pet store/grooming salon, also you could try these….

When my dog has puppies we use these
1.) Top dog, profesinal, or just jonsen & jonsen babby shampoo ( depends on 3 things: your price range, age of the puppy, and your dogs’ breed/hair thickness & langth)

2.) For food it would also depend on a cople things puppy age, size/breed, and price range)…If the puppy is realy young i would give it ethier athority or pedagree with a mix of water and dry milk o top of their food to soften it….. If they are older use the same brands with out the milk…. or you can just call your vet and ask wat he sugests..

3.) At home we use this one kind but I don’t remember what it is called but again just ask a person at the store or your vet realy any kind works but, my dogs realy like the beef flavored ones…oh one other important thing to remember is that when you get the tooth paste
get one of those things that looks like a finger puppet tooth brush if your dog is still getting its teeth.

4. ) there is not realy one I would impreticularly sugest ask some one at the store. If it is a large breed I would sugest getting a bed that has ceder chips in it or somthing that smells good….

that is prety much all of the stuff I use for my dogs, you can email me if you have any other s

What are the best dry dog foods out of these to feed my Pitbulls?

January 7th, 2010

-Timberwolf Organics
-Taste Of The Wild
-Canidae
-Blue BuffaloBlue Wilderness
-Diamond Extreme Athlete (Or another food by Diamond)
-Innova Evo
-Solid Gold

I want to feed them the best. Something that is going to give them glossy good looking coats, muscle, and just overall great health.

Honestly I have tried all of those above and they all have too high of protein for my dog, giving him the runs. Seriously though, its terrible. Every dog is different, especially when it comes to the sensitivity of a pit’s skin. I feed him Nature’s Recipe – Healthy Skin, Venison Meal & Rice. His coat is always flawless, and he is one beasty boy. haha.
