What’s better? Dog Food Question…?

January 17th, 2010

Sort of a poll, I guess.
What’s better?

A) Feeding my dog Solid Gold: Barking at the Moon dog food, and feed him raw /once/ a week?
(or)
B) Feeding my dog Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul dog food, and feed him raw /twice/ a week?

Chicken Soup has a 4/6 star rating. And Solid Gold: BatM has a 6/6 star rating and has no grains.

Well, feeding him raw once a week won’t hurt anything. I already feed him Chicken Soup a raw twice a week. In fact, he gets raw today. =P I only feed him once a day (as that’s what he prefers) And he has a whole 24 hours to digest the dry or raw food, so neither of them get in the way of each other. He’s been doing great on it. And it really keeps his teeth clean. I don’t know how I’d keep his teethe clean if I didn’t feed him raw….
Oh, and Solid Gold: BatM is the ONLY super premium dog food with no grans that they sell at any stores over here. It’s actually sold at Petco over here. And I don’t know where I’d get Canidae….

Either food is great. They both have fantastic ingredients so in the long run it is a matter of personal choice and which one you have easiest access to.
Feeding raw is great too…There are people that feed a total raw diet and then there are some that alternate like you are thinking of doing and then still others that feed a morning meal of kibble and a night meal of raw with much success..Just remember not to feed raw & kibble at the same meal.

Question about Wellness Dog Food ..?

January 7th, 2010

How come on the Dog food review page, Wellness dry food is rated 4 star (the fish + sweet potatoe) .. but then the Wellness Supermix dry food is 5 star? And how come the wet food is also 4 star?

My older dog only likes wet food and just recently started eating dry food (Innova) mixed with wet. I was thinking of getting a sample Wellness since it had flavored dry food to see if he would eat it by itsself.. but I was just wonder why they are all different stars?

Does it matter? Is there something I’m missing? Or is it still a really good dog food?

Thanks

I don’t feed Wellness (not available locally) but it is a very good food. My guess is that one formula may have more grains in it? Try to avoid corn, wheat and soy if at all possible and make sure the first ingredient is a named meat. Wellness is made by Old Mother Hubbard in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. They have been around for a long time and have a great reputation.

Innova is also an great food although I have heard some dogs have had loose bowel movements with it. If your dog is doing well on the Innova, stick with it unless you think it’s time for a change. In that case, Wellness would be a great choice to try. Eagle Pack and Canidae are also very good. I feed Canidae here and my dogs are all doing well on it.

If you are interested in canine nutrition, there is a great magazine called Whole Dog Journal. It covers lots of different topics but everyone gets excited in February and March with the list of top rated dog foods comes out. Here is the link to their site: http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/

Is there a comparable hills rx kd cheaper dog food to buy?

December 17th, 2009

I’ve heard mixed reviews on this dog food. It’s bad and the rx ones are good. I can’t afford 48.00 a bag dog food consistently. ofcourse i want the best for my dog, but the kids come first. does any one have suggestions?

Hills’ Science Diet is… CRAP! Just because a vet recommends it, doesn’t mean it’s good.

Some good quality foods are :

Canidae $44 for a 40 pound bag

Wellness – $28 for a 15 pound bag
Wellness CORE

Solid Gold

Taste of the Wild – $25 for a 15 pound bag
http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/

Innova
Eagle pack Holistic
Chicken Soup for the dog Lovers Soul
Orijen
EVO
Merrick $12 for a 5 pound bag
Blue Buffalo
Avoderm

Never get low quality foods like :

Pedigree
IAMS
Eukanuba
Science Diet
BilJac
Beneful
Purina Dog Chow
Alpo
Nutro
Dad’s
Royal Canin
Kibbles ‘n Bits
Mighty Dog
Or ANY grocery Store brand

For they all have, Corn,Soy, By-Products, Artificial Colorings/Flavors, and other crappy stuff.

*** Vets are NOT animal nutritionists. ***

This website should be able to help you on picking out a good quality food. Stick on the 4-5-6 star range.

This website is good to!

Dog Food Reviews, Rating Score & Opinions all clash?

December 13th, 2009

According to the 100-point rating score, Ol’ Roy dog food gets about 6pts, Beneful gets about 16, Alpo Prime Cuts gets 81 and Blue Buffalo gets over 100 (I accidentally closed the particular tab). Everyone knows that Ol’ Roy is garbage, Beneful (according to a rep from PetSmart) is one of the top selling dog foods, Alpo is quite common to be found cheaply priced and Blue Buffalo is a little pricier (about $1.25/lb or so) and an excellent dog food.

After reading opinion-based reviews, they say that ALL Alpo is garbage however the point-based scale made it appear that the Prime Cuts is a much higher quality and only 20-something points below the 3x more expensive food.

In this particular instance, should I go by the point-based score or what? Here’s a link:

Thanks but do you think it’d be ok to keep my 2 shelties on Alpo for now until I can afford Blue Buffalo? It didn’t rate AS poorly as many other well-known higher-priced foods…
Thanks for the input so far BUT nobody’s answering my particular questions but adding what you suggest I should feed my furballs.

As for table scraps, they get slim to none – maybe a few tablespoons of scraps weekly which are usually veggies or real meat – not bones, etc.

Yup, the scale is right. Can’t go wrong with Blue Buffalo. No corn or other fillers. Just good protein. They need to take Ol Roy off the market nothing but trash.

what DO they put in dog food?

December 5th, 2009

I’m talking about the cheap kind like Pedigree and Alpo. I hear a lot of crap on the internet but has anyone actually seen what they put into pet food for themselves?

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/index.php

I used to work with a girl who had a job working at a dog food processing plant. As for how truthful her story was, is about how much you know about meat processing plants but this is what she told me…

They would recieve deliveries of containers with unused or unfit meat for human consumption, i.e. skin, bones, fat, parts we humans just don’t care to eat. Add some mix of poultry, beef, horse…who knows. Sometimes feathers and feet and beaks. Corn, fillers, by-products dogs can’t even digest to make them feel full. A really bad food is like the crap you get out of a grocery store dumpster and mix and mash it into a dog’s food. WOULD YOU EAT THAT!?

What do you look for in dog food?

November 25th, 2009

I run a dog food reviewing site: (http://dogfoodchat.com/canidae-beef-ocean-fish-meal/)<– Sample review. I am interested in knowing what educated dog owners are looking for when they look for dog food reviews. You can view the site and give suggestions on what looks good and what you would like to see.

Any feedback is greatly suggested. I want to provide a source of information that is greatly resourcedul.

puppy chow is bad for your dog!

basically… now corn, wheat or soy.. if there is corn wheat or soy.. there should be very little of it.. and the first ingrediants are the ones with the most in the food

Has dog food analysis written a review on the updated canidae formula?

November 17th, 2009

No, not yet, I’ve been wondering when they’re going to do it, since they’ve been listed on there for almost a month…

Why do people keep giving me that dog food analysis website to me, when it’s not even English food!?

November 12th, 2009

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/

Never heard of any of them before.
Poodle Puff, you did not answer the question, you are just ranting now, you are being reported.
But your on the UK and Ireland Yahoo!

So, the food available to you isn’t on that website. You can, however, use the information on that website to form opinions about the food that is available to you.

Of course, that means you need to read and think for yourself, instead of relying on random interweb strangers (or a random interweb site) to do so for you.

You can learn to "rate" any food, once you do some research about ingredients and terms on dog food labels.

Then you have to learn that there is no one "best" food for every dog. So try a few, and see how your dog does on them. The proof is in the "pudding", so to speak.

add: "But your on the UK and Ireland Yahoo!"

No sweetie, I’m on Yahoo Canada. Why are you asking about British food on a Canadian site? Oh yeah, that’s right – it’s INTERNATIONAL.
