What’s the difference between adult dog food and puppy dog food??????

January 17th, 2010

I’m just curious as to what it is and whether a puppy can live on adult dog food.

These are the questions that keep me awake at night… LOL

There are two main differences between dog food and puppy food;

1. the size of the kibble, puppy food has smaller pieces to make it easier for little puppies to chew and digest.

2. it is higher in protein because growing dogs need it for energy and to aid growth.

It is also true to say the nutrients are slightly different.

On the whole yes if the kibble isn’t too big a puppy could eat dog food, in fact most manufacturers say to change puppies to adult food at 6-8 months anyway, it’s just the amount of food that varies (puppies need twice as much food per body weight than dogs).

Sleep tight. ;)

Is there a big difference between adult dog food and puppy dog food?

January 7th, 2010

I adopted a toy poodle and when I took him to the vet they looked at his teeth said he was about 8 or 9 months. That was back in February. It’s now May and I was thinking about buying him adult food because that would make him either 11 or 12 months now. Is there a hug difference between adult and puppy food? Would it be bad to feed him adult food too soon or extend the puppy food till after 12 months? Whats the difference?

If he’s 11 or 12 months old, you can put him on adult food. Smaller dogs mature quicker than larger breeds, anyway. The main difference is that puppy food has a higher fat and protein content than adult food.

has anyone ever heard of sprinkling meat tenderizer in dog/puppy food to deter them from eating own poop?

December 29th, 2009

Meat Tenderizer… it is sprinkled on their food. this meat tenderizer develops a foul taste in a dog’s digestive system. So that when the puppy/dog eats own poop, its supposed to taste worse,it sort of deters them from eating their own poop?

I have heard of that and seen the method recommended. I really don’t know if it works because it makes the owner more diligent about watching and most likely picking up the poop or if it actually displeasing to the dog. I haven’t seen it cause harm nor will it replace some missing nutrient.

Does anyone know if Prism Premium dog/puppy food is a good choice for a Boston Terrier?

This is what the breeder is feeding my puppy. Is it a good brand? I have heard that lots of dog foods out there are crap. Thanks!
If is not good food, do you have any suggestions of a higher quality food?

Absolutely not. I can only guess that you are using the "Growth" formula. Look at the ingredients:
Chicken By-Product Meal, Ground Yellow Corn, Ground Brown Rice, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Natural Mixed Tocopherols), Dried Beet Pulp, Pork Meal, Fish Meal, Flaxseed, Dried Egg Product, Brewers Dried Yeast, Salt, Potassium Chloride and Vitamin-Mineral Fortified.

Byproducts, corn, chicken fat, and beet pulp should never be seen in a dog food. They are all low quality ingredients. There are much better foods out there.

Should I be feeding puppy or dog food?

December 17th, 2009

I adopted a new dog yesterday after the loss of my other one in June, but I’m wondering if I should be feeding her puppy or dog food. She is a three month old German Pointer. She likes the dog food I bought, but I’m wondering if its the right thing for her nutritionally. Should I be switching to puppy food until she is older or will she be OK with the dog food?

At three months of age, I would feed a good quality food for a large breed puppy. Nutro and a few other good quality lines of food have large breed puppy food. This helps ensure the puppy’s bones don’t grow too fast, which could lead to dysplasia problems. If you adopted her from a shelter, she may not have had the best puppy nutrition. I would also get her puppy vitamins. They come in "treat" form and puppies love them. Several brands to choose from. Petco, Petsmart, vet’s office (more pricey). Make sure you get her out and socialize with lots of people, pets, places! Puppy obedience classes are great!

When should I switch from puppy to dog food?

December 13th, 2009

My puppy just turned 9 months old today and before I buy another bag of his food, I want to be sure that he is still supposed to be on puppy food. When did you switch it over? Ive heard 6 months up to a year. Let me know!

Also, what dog food is the best that you use? My puppy likes his Purina puppy food.

Yes, you are correct.
6 months of age is when you go to adult food.
Big dogs- 1 year

Wellness
Eagle Pack, Holistic Select
Innova, Evo
Canidae
Merrick
Azmira
^ These foods are loaded with vitamins.

Purina is not a good food for your dog. It’s full of corn and fillers. It contains inadequant meat content, animal byproduts, low quality grain and meat products, fat of unidentifiable origin, aftificial color, and sugar. Purina has too many meat by-products, but not enough meat. It also has too much corn, which is hard for dogs to digest, and is basically just a filler

Please switch to another brand ! :)

What is the best puppy and dog food for giant breeds?

What is the best puppy food and dog food for a giant dog breed?

Many vets and specialists do not recommend feeding a large breed formula to any dog at any age, especially to a puppy. It is too much protein and not enough fat for them, and it can make a puppy grow too fast, resulting in bone and joint problems.

Anyway, there are some great puppy and adult formulas, along with some all life stages formulas, but you will not find any of them at your local grocery store. You will have to do some online shopping or go to your local pet stores and animal feed stores to find them and compare prices.

I feed my dog Taste of the Wild High Prairie, which is an all life stages formula. It is grain free, and is one of the best commercial foods on the market. It isn’t too high in protein, so it can be fed to puppies. Most other grain free foods should not be fed to puppies, because of higher protein levels. Another all life stages food is Canadie.

Other great brands include Merrick, Blue Buffalo, California Naturals, Innova, and Wellness. They make puppy and adult formulas. You should feed a puppy formula until the pup is a year old.

Is it harmfull to give a puppy regular dog food?

November 25th, 2009

I went shopping today for dog food but I didnt see that it was NOT puppy food my dogs about 3 months and i dont know if that will hurt him in any way, can it?
im not so sure how many months he is but i think hes in that "puppy range" still.

If it is the case where you just bought the food by mistake and will get puppy food over the next few days or so, then it won’t do him any harm. Puppy food has higher vitamin and nutrient count, but other than that, the differences are not so huge as to cause problems, as long as it is temporary. However, sudden changes in the diet can lead to tummy upsets, so if the brand is different, it could make him sick or give him diarrhoea.

When can I start feeding my puppy regular dog food?

November 21st, 2009

Please only answer this if you are knowledgeable of Wellness dog food. We have a 2 year old dog that eats Wellness, limited ingredient Fish and Sweet Potato. Our 6 month puppy is eating puppy food, but I’m wondering if we can transition him to the Wellness. I was sort of thinking it was ok because its a limited ingredient food and made for sensitive stomachs, but wanted to get 2nd opinions…
My dog is a 27 lb. border collie mix – again, please only answer if you are familiar with the Wellness brand food.

After about 1 year you can start feeding your dog regular dog food. Your sixth month old puppy still needs to eat his puppy food because he needs the ingredients right now because there is special vitamins and nutrients in it that will help your puppy grow healthy and strong. I hope I helped :)
